about
Kierst today announces her signing to Sad Club Records (Ellie Bleach/John Myrtle) and shares new single How to Be. The new single follows a string of self-recorded and self-released Bandcamp recordings from her time at college. Initially from Columbia, South Carolina, Kierst is now based in Brooklyn, New York. Grounded in poignancy and evocative memory, with How to Be Kierst explores themes of loss with a rare grace.
On the new single, Kierst offers "It’s about being tethered to a place because of a person, and confronting those feelings after cutting ties– just being in limbo and learning how to recenter yourself."
lyrics
It was a wedding upstate
that rekindled an ache
I thought it would fade, boy
But it keeps coming in waves, boy
Word spreads quick in our town
something we used to renounce
Did they get in your head, boy?
Do you wish you were dead, boy?
It seems you’re still in my dreams
few and far between
I don’t know how to be without you
or what to do
I have so much to lose
Two lonely kids, a shared heartbeat
just because I lived right down the street
I walked down 3rd all alone
I couldn’t pick up the phone
I can handle goodbyes, boy
Ours just never felt right, boy
You drove the 26 home
sped down lone southern roads
Would you do it again, boy?
Was it worth all this hurt, boy?
It seems you’re still in my dreams
few and far between
I don’t know how to be without you
or what to do
I have so much to lose
